Popular weight loss diets have different effects on micronutrient adequacy PDF Print E-mail

Background  Health professionals agree that obesity is a major public health issue, and the American public agrees, as indicated by the $30 billion spent on weight-loss products yearly. Indeed, there is no shortage of advice on how to lose weight, with a new weight-loss diet published almost daily. These books often advocate diets of various macronutrient distributions that sometimes deviate from that recommended by the US Department of Agriculture’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans (45–65%, 20–35%, and 10–35% of calories from carbohydrates, fat, and protein, respectively). Despite the intense scientific and public interest, there is much debate on whether any of the popular weight-loss diets is superior to the others. There is also concern that some may result in inadequate vitamin and mineral intake. To study this, researchers at the Stanford University Medical School compared what people tend to eat when they are asked to follow 4 common weight-loss regimens: Atkins, Zone, LEARN (Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitudes, Relationships, Nutrition), and Ornish diets. Their results are published in the August 2010 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Should "Male Menopause" Be Treated? PDF Print E-mail

Sweaty, sleepless nights. Inexplicable grouchiness. Weight gain, headaches, and no sex drive. Many women approaching menopause can relate—and so can Mike Coleman.

Last year, a string of restless nights sent the 46-year-old insurance agent from Lineville, Ala., to his doctor. After a blood workup, Coleman was informed that his testosterone levels were below normal, and were likely to blame for the symptoms he'd been experiencing.

"It made sense," he says. "My energy levels were not what they used to be. But you kind of think, ‘How could this happen to me?' "

Coleman's condition isn't all that rare. Quite a few men—up to 25%—have testosterone levels that fall below normal in middle age, and in some cases this transition causes a collection of symptoms that has come to be known as "male menopause" (or "manopause").

"Testosterone levels gradually decline with aging, usually around age 40," says Alvin Matsumoto, MD, a professor of geriatric medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, in Seattle. Although the decline is natural, Dr. Matsumoto adds, "that doesn't mean it has no physiological or clinical consequences or shouldn't be treated."

Low vitamin B-6 and vitamin B-12 status related to depression in older people PDF Print E-mail

Background  Folate, vitamin B-6, and vitamin B-12 are nutrients that coordinately orchestrate the synthesis of compounds needed for brain development and activity. For decades, researchers have documented associations between these vitamins and neurological outcomes such as depression. Moreover, the recent fortification of the US cereal grain supply with folate to reduce the risk of neural tube defects has reenergized scientific interest in this often debated relation. Using data collected in older adult residents living in neighborhoods located in Chicago’s south side, researchers at Rush University have been able to contribute additional information concerning the possibility that inadequate consumption of these vitamins may be related to depression in this at-risk population. Results of their study, as well as an editorial written by scientists at Bangor University (United Kingdom), have been published in the August 2010 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Male hypogonadism associated with advanced cancer: A systematic review - Abstract PDF Print E-mail

Male hypogonadism is commonly diagnosed on the basis of subphysiological concentrations of androgen hormones, and is associated with many symptoms present in advanced cancer. Androgen deficiency might be an important cause of muscle wasting in both cancer cachexia and sarcopenia. We did a systematic review of the clinical association of male hypogonadism in advanced cancer. We searched PubMed, Medline, and Embase for publications on the relation between male hypogonadism and functional status, nutritional status, body composition, symptoms, and quality of life in patients with advanced cancer.

Effect of long-term treatment with antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and selenium) on arterial compliance, humoral factors and inflammatory markers in patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors PDF Print E-mail

Abstract| Background : Antioxidant supplementations have the potential to alleviate the atherosclerotic damage caused by excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The present study evaluated the effects of prolonged antioxidant treatment on arterial elasticity, inflammatory and metabolic measures in patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

Methods
Study participants were randomly assigned to two groups. Group 1 received oral supplementation with 2 capsules per day of Mid Life Guard, SupHerb, Israel. In each capsule vitamin C (500 mg) vitamin E (200 iu), co-enzyme Q10 (60 mg) and selenium (100 mcg), Group 2 received matching placebo(SupHerb) for 6 months. Patients were evaluated for lipid profile, HbA1C, insulin, C-peptide, hs-CRP, endothelin, aldosterone, plasma renin activity and Homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Arterial elasticity was evaluated using pulse wave contour analysis (HDI CR 2000, Eagan, Minnesota).
